Skip Badaling on weekends. Pick Mutianyu for the best mix of restoration, scenery, and crowd control, or Jinshanling if you want a 4-hour ridge hike with almost no other tourists. Go on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and reach the gate by 8:00 AM, when tour buses are still loading at hotels in central Beijing. Mutianyu costs ¥45 entry plus ¥15 for the shuttle bus to the cable-car station. Round-trip cable car runs ¥120, and the chairlift-up plus toboggan-down combo is ¥140. Bring your passport: tickets are linked to passport numbers and checked at every gate. For transport, the cleanest option is a private DiDi or Trip.com sedan at ¥600-800 round trip with the driver waiting at the lot for 4-5 hours. Public bus 877 from Deshengmen serves Badaling for ¥12, but does not run to Mutianyu. The Beijing Tourist Distribution Center bus to Mutianyu is ¥80 round trip and departs 7:00-10:00 AM.
