Jiuzhaigou sells no tickets at the gate. Not a reduced allocation, not a queue — zero. Every entry is real-name, booked online against a passport number, capped at roughly 41,000 visitors a day, and checked by face recognition at the turnstile.
Which means the trip is decided before you leave Chengdu. Get the ticket and the rest is a pleasant day on boardwalks. Miss it and there is no version of showing up that works.
Booking it with a foreign passport
You book through the official 「九寨沟旅游」 or 「阿坝州旅游」 WeChat accounts, or at abatour.com, or through an OTA. Two things stand between you and a confirmed slot, and neither is the rule about tour groups — there is no such rule, and there has not been one for years.
Language. The official flow is Chinese only. Screenshot the pages and run them through a translation app before you start, not while a payment timer is running.
Payment. It wants WeChat Pay. Link a Visa, Mastercard or Amex before you travel — about fifteen minutes, roughly a 3% fee, and it unlocks the official booking page. The WeChat Pay setup guide walks through it.
If the card linking will not take, the fallback that reliably works is asking your hotel in Zhangzha, or a Chengdu agency, to book the slot in your name for a small fee. Tickets are date-specific and non-refundable once used, so check the date three times.
If your date is sold out
Autumn dates do sell out. There are two legitimate ways back in and one that cannot work.
The refund release. Cancellations go back into the official system the night before, roughly between 18:00 and 22:00. Sit on the booking page and refresh through that window.
The same-day standby (候补). The official platform opens standby tickets from 07:00 until around 12:00 on the day itself, and a successful standby still gets you through before the 14:00 entry cutoff.
Not a scalper. The gate runs face recognition against the booking, so a ticket in somebody else's name does not admit you. You will have paid for a photograph of a turnstile.

The two are sold together and the shuttle is not optional. Insurance is an extra ¥10 or so and is genuinely optional. Plenty of guides still quote ¥169 or ¥170 for the peak entrance — that is the older figure, and budgeting from it leaves you ¥20 short at the point where you can least afford a surprise.
Note what the off-season row means: the park does not close for the winter. It runs at half price with almost nobody in it.
The off-season trick worth ¥60
In off-season only, you can add a second-entry pass (二次进沟) when you buy your first-day ticket. It costs a ¥20 administrative fee and waives the entrance fee for the following day — you re-pay only the ¥80 shuttle.
So two unhurried winter days cost ¥160 plus ¥20 plus ¥80, or ¥260, against ¥320 for buying twice. The catch is procedural: it has to be requested at the moment of first purchase and cannot be added afterwards, and it does not exist in peak season, when a second day means a whole new ticket at ¥280.
Inside: ride up, walk down
The park is a Y and you cannot walk it — the valley arms run tens of kilometres. The shuttle is compulsory and already bundled into your ticket.
The move that saves hours: take the shuttle to the top of an arm first, then walk the boardwalks downhill. Everyone else works upward and meets the crowd coming the other way.
From the entrance, ride to Nuorilang — the central junction, with the visitor centre and the food court.
Left arm, Zechawa Valley, up to Long Lake (Changhai). Sit on the left side of the bus for the snow mountains and the Changhai view.
Right arm, Rize Valley, up to Primeval Forest and Arrow Bamboo Lake. Sit on the right for Five-Flower Lake and Pearl Shoal Waterfall.
The bottom stem is Shuzheng Valley, which you take on the way out.
Tell the driver your stop before boarding. Shuttles do not stop everywhere by default, and this is the single most common way people end up two valleys from where they meant to be. Save photographs of your target stop names in Chinese to show staff.
Three hard times: the first shuttle leaves the entrance at 07:30, entry stops at 14:00, and the last bus down from Nuorilang is 19:00. It is day-use only, with no overnight stays inside. One full day covers the highlights if you are on that first shuttle; arrive at 14:30 and there is no negotiation available.
Altitude, honestly
The gate sits near 2,000 m and Long Lake is around 3,100 m. Most people are fine and some get a light headache. Layers matter more than altitude pills — it is cold on the upper boardwalks in August.
The real altitude question is Huanglong, at 3,200 to 3,500 m. If you are adding it, spend a day in Chengdu first, do Jiuzhaigou before Huanglong rather than after, drink more water than feels necessary, and walk the boardwalks slowly.
Getting there
Two routes, and the train has changed the maths. Since Huanglongjiuzhai Station opened on the Chengdu–Xining line in August 2024, a C or D train from Chengdu East takes 1h40m to 2h at ¥128–141 second class. The station is not the park: it is about 90 km and two hours further by road, on the 九旅悦行 shuttle (¥28–56, rolling departures) or a fixed ¥240 blue-and-white taxi for up to four people, which is ¥60–70 a head if you share at the rank.
Flying into Jiuzhai Huanglong (JZH) from Chengdu is an hour in the air and considerably more money, and the airport shuts for fog and snow on a handful of days between November and March. The full comparison — flight, train, bus and charter, with prices — is in the Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou guide.
Either way, plan to lose most of a day on the transfer and sleep in Zhangzha, the town at the gate. That is what makes the 07:30 first shuttle possible, and that first shuttle is what makes the whole thing work. Use Didi for the run to the gate rather than the cars waiting at the bus station.
Small things
Bring food. Instant noodles inside the park are ¥35 and a boiled egg is ¥12.
Weekdays, Tuesday to Thursday. Golden Week (1–7 October) is not a trade-off, it is a different activity.
The bilingual audio guide is ¥30 and worth it mainly for the legend of the goddess who dropped her mirror and made the lakes.
Do not leave the boardwalks. Rangers fine people ¥200 for cutting across, and the shortcut does not save time anyway.
