Emei Mountain in a Day: Work Backwards From the Last Bus
One number decides whether this works as a day trip: the last bus down from Leidongping. Miss it and you are staying on the mountain, because there is no walking out from 2,400 m in the dark.
I have done this three times in two years with different visitors. Everything below is built backwards from that bus.
Getting there
Leg | How | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Chengdu East → Emeishan | High-speed rail, second class | ¥57 | 1h20m–1h35m |
Chengdu East → Emeishan | High-speed rail, first class | ¥91 | Same |
Emeishan Station → Baoguo Si | Green tourist bus, 200 m from the exit | ¥10 | 15 min |
Emeishan Station → Baoguo Si | Didi | ¥25–35 | 12 min |
Trains run from both Chengdu East and Chengdu South on the Chengdu–Leshan–Emei intercity line. Book on Trip.com or 12306 with your passport — you can use the passport at the gate rather than collecting a paper ticket. Take something at or before 07:00.
What you pay on the mountain
Item | Cost |
|---|---|
Park entry, peak season | ¥160 |
Park entry, off-season | Lower — sources give ¥80 and ¥110 for different windows; confirm on the official WeChat mini-programme |
Internal shuttle, Baoguo Si ↔ Leidongping | ¥90 return, ¥50 one way. Compulsory. |
Jinding cable car, Jieyindian ↔ Golden Summit | ¥120 return peak (¥65 up, ¥55 down); about ¥30 off-season |
Wannian cable car | ¥65 return, ¥40 one way |
The off-season entry fee is the one figure worth checking yourself before you go. Published sources disagree on both the price and where the season boundary falls, and the official mini-programme is the only version that settles it.
New for 2026: from 10 March the sightseeing bus up to Leidongping requires a timed reservation. Book it when you book the entry ticket, not on the day.
Which cable cars to skip
There are two, and a day trip should use exactly one. Skip Wannian entirely — it is a lovely detour to a monastery and it costs you the Golden Summit. Go straight up to the Leidongping terminus, walk the 20 minutes to the Jieyindian cable-car base, and ride to the top.
The Golden Summit is at 3,077 m. It runs 15 to 20°C colder than Chengdu even in August and below −10°C in winter, so a windproof layer goes in the bag regardless of the weather you left behind.
On public holidays the queue, not the price, is the risk. During the May 2025 Labour Day holiday people reported waits long enough to eat the day.
The timeline that works
05:30 up, baozi from a stall near Chengdu East.
06:15 at the gates, on the 06:40 or 07:00 train.
08:15 into Emeishan Station, tourist bus to Baoguo Si.
08:45 buy entry plus the return shuttle at the visitor centre.
Then up, with the last bus down from Leidongping as your hard stop.
That is a fourteen-hour day and it is tight but real — provided you give up Wannian and the Elephant Bathing Pool. Wanting all three means staying the night.
The monkeys
The Tibetan macaques around Qingyin Pavilion are a highlight and a genuine hazard. Rangers patrol with bamboo sticks and will intervene, but they cannot be everywhere.
No plastic bags in your hands. Monkeys read a plastic bag as food and will take it off you.
Do not feed them, including the ¥10 bags of corn sold at the gate. That is why they behave this way.
No eye contact — staring is a threat in macaque terms.
Phones and sunglasses in zipped pockets before you enter the zone.
When to stay over instead
If sunrise, the sea of clouds, or the Buddha's halo is the point, a day trip cannot deliver it — those depend on early-morning light you cannot reach from Chengdu.
Where | Cost | What it is |
|---|---|---|
Monastery rooms at Wannian Si or Xixin Suo | ¥80–200 per bed | Shared room, basic bedding, vegetarian breakfast |
Leidongping guesthouses | ¥180–350 per room | Closest to the summit cable car |
Jinding summit hotel | ¥300–500 low, ¥500–900 peak | The only way to be up there at sunrise |
Given the choice, I would take two days. You see more, the pace is sane, and a night in a monastery is the part people remember.
What the day costs
Item | Peak season |
|---|---|
Rail, second class | ¥57 |
Tourist bus to Baoguo Si | ¥10 |
Park entry | ¥160 |
Internal shuttle, return | ¥90 |
Jinding cable car, return | ¥120 |
Lunch at the summit | ¥40 |
Tourist bus back | ¥10 |
Total | ≈¥487 |
A group tour is ¥580–900 per person, with a shopping stop and a tea ceremony nobody asked for. You save money and you control the clock, which on a mountain with a last bus is the thing that matters.
Other days out from the city: Leshan and the Giant Buddha is on the same rail line and is the easier one — doing both in a day is technically possible and not worth it. Jiuzhaigou without a tour is the multi-day version. The city itself is in the Chengdu guide.
FAQ
Can you do Emei Mountain from Chengdu in one day?
Yes, if you go straight for the Golden Summit and skip the Wannian cable car. Roughly fourteen hours door to door, and the binding constraint is the last bus down from Leidongping rather than the train times.
What does the day cost without a tour?
About ¥487 per person in peak season: ¥57 rail, ¥20 local buses, ¥160 entry, ¥90 internal shuttle, ¥120 cable car, ¥40 lunch. Group tours run ¥580–900.
Do I need to book anything in advance?
From 10 March 2026 the sightseeing bus to Leidongping needs a timed reservation, so book that with your entry ticket. Cable cars are bought on site, though weekend queues run 30 to 60 minutes.
Is there altitude sickness at the Golden Summit?
At 3,077 m most people notice mild breathlessness on the final stairs and nothing worse. Dress for it instead — it is 15 to 20°C colder than Chengdu.
