Harbin's Ice Festival Is Three Events, Not One

There is no such thing as the Harbin Ice Festival. There are three separate ticketed events, in three parts of the city, on three different calendars, and they cost ¥726 between them.

Almost every English guide treats them as one attraction. That is how people arrive on 28 December expecting ice lanterns and find the lantern fair does not open for another week.

The three events

The concession rate at Ice-Snow World covers anyone over 1.2 m and between 6 and 18, plus Harbin residents. Zhaolin Park itself is free all year — the ¥200 buys the lantern fair, which is a separate event held inside it.

Two scheduling facts that decide when you should come. Zhaolin's fair does not start until 5 January, so a Christmas or New Year trip gets two of the three. And the snow sculptures on Sun Island are white, carved snow that needs daylight, while Ice-Snow World is lit blocks of river ice that need dark. They are not competing for your time — they are the day half and the night half of the same day.

The visa detail specific to Harbin

Harbin joined the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme on 17 December 2024, which means eligible passports can come for the ice without applying for anything. Two conditions attach, and both are narrower than the scheme elsewhere.

• Harbin Taiping International Airport is the only eligible port in Heilongjiang. Arriving overland or at another provincial airport does not qualify.

• Within Heilongjiang, the permitted stay area is Harbin city. Most provinces on the list open the whole province; this is one of the four that names cities instead. Yabuli and the Russian border towns are outside it.

You still need an onward ticket to a third country, which for a Harbin trip usually means routing on to Seoul, Tokyo or Vladivostok rather than flying home. The cold is a logistics problem, not a comfort problem

Harbin runs −20°C to −30°C through the season. Dressing for it is the easy part. The things that actually fail are the ones you were relying on.

• Your phone shuts down around −20°C, with the battery reading 40% one minute and nothing the next. Inner coat pocket, against your body, with a stick-on heat patch. Taking it out only to shoot is the discipline.

• Condensation is what kills electronics here, not the cold itself. Going from −25°C into a heated restaurant fogs the lens and puts water inside the body. Put the camera in a sealed bag before you go indoors and let it warm up in there.

• Heat patches (暖宝宝) are sold everywhere for a few yuan. Buy a box on day one, not a pair.

• Down jacket, thermal trousers, snow boots, hat, gloves, scarf. Boots matter more than the coat — you will stand on ice for four hours at Ice-Snow World.

Getting in and around

Airport shuttle buses run four lines at a flat ¥20. Line 3 passes Central Avenue, stopping at Jingwei 2nd Street. That is the one you want if you are staying in the old town, which you should be.

Harbin is also on the high-speed network, about five hours from Beijing. Booking on 12306 with a passport avoids the OTA fee, and booking early costs nothing because cancelling more than eight days out is free.

Sun Island runs a free shuttle from the Songbei Avenue entrance to Taiyangshi Square between 08:30 and 17:00, and it will bring you back on your ticket stub. Note that 17:00 cut-off — it is the reason Sun Island has to be the daytime half.

Where the old town is

Central Avenue (中央大街) is a 1.4 km cobbled pedestrian street of Russian, Byzantine and Art Nouveau facades, built when Harbin was a railway town on the Chinese Eastern Railway and roughly a third of the city was Russian. It is the reason Harbin does not look like anywhere else in China.

Zhaolin Park sits a few hundred metres off it, which makes the lantern fair the easy evening: walk the street, eat, then go and look at lit ice without crossing the city. The other two venues are further out and need a taxi or a bus.

Eat the things that only make sense in this climate. Madie'er ice cream (马迭尔冰棍) sold from street windows at −25°C, because it does not melt. Frozen pears. Red sausage (红肠), which is a Russian inheritance. A three-day shape

• Day 1. Arrive, Central Avenue on foot in the afternoon, Zhaolin lantern fair after dark. Low commitment while you adjust to the cold.

• Day 2. Sun Island snow sculptures in daylight, back by the 17:00 shuttle, then Ice-Snow World in the evening when the lights are on. This is the long day and the cold one.

• Day 3. Saint Sophia Cathedral, the Siberian tiger park if that appeals, and the Songhua River, which you can walk across.

Three days is right. Two works if you accept doing Sun Island and Ice-Snow World on the same day, which is eight hours outdoors below −20°C and harder than it sounds.
