In Chongqing, Your Address Needs a Floor Number
In Chongqing, "where are you" is not answered by an address. It is answered by an address and a floor number, and if you cannot give the floor number the driver cannot reach you.
This is not a quirk. The city is built up the sides of two river gorges, so roads stack vertically and a map that tells you a place is 200 metres away is describing a horizontal distance across a 60-metre drop. Amap has publicly said Chongqing is the city it gets blamed for most.
What actually goes wrong
Your GPS pin drifts onto a road directly above or below the one you are standing on. The driver arrives, is 30 metres from you, and neither of you can see the other.
Walking directions give a distance that is technically right and useless, because the connection between the two levels is a lift in a building three hundred metres back.
You describe your location by what you can see, and what you can see is also visible from four other levels.
The fix is to stop using the map pin as the answer. Give a named landmark plus the level: the name of the road you are on, which is usually signed, and the building entrance. If you are in a mall, give the floor. Screenshot the Chinese name of your hotel's street, not just the hotel, because the hotel may have entrances on two different streets at two different heights.
Practical version: when you order a car, walk to a named road with traffic on it before you confirm the pickup, and use the in-app chat to send the road name in Chinese. Didi works without a Chinese phone number, and in this city the chat function matters more than the map.
Three buildings that explain the city
Once you accept the vertical logic, the famous sites stop being gimmicks and start being demonstrations.
Hongyadong (洪崖洞) has eleven floors and two ground floors. Floor 1 opens onto Jiabin Road at river level; floor 11 opens onto Cangbai Road at the top of the cliff. Both are street level. Most visitors photograph it from the outside at night and never go in, which means they miss that the inside is an eleven-storey maze.
Kuixinglou (魁星楼) is the one people post about. Its floors 1 to 8 are a car park, the outdoor plaza on floor 9 connects to Beiqu Road, floor 1's exit connects to the riverside road, and two sky bridges run from the floor-9 plaza across to the 22nd floor of an office tower. You walk out of a 22nd floor onto a street.
Liziba station (李子坝) is where the Line 2 monorail runs through floors 6 and 7 of a residential and commercial building at No. 39 Liziba Main Street — 132 metres of train inside a building people live in. It is the first station in China built into an occupied building rather than beside one. There is a dedicated viewing platform below, and the trains are frequent enough that you will not wait.
The hotpot is not Chengdu's hotpot
Chongqing hotpot is beef tallow, heavier on the chilli and lighter on the sweetness than the Chengdu version, and traditionally served in a nine-square grid (九宫格) rather than a divided pot. The grid is not decoration: the centre square boils hardest and is for things that cook fast, the corners are cooler and are for things that need time.

Two days, and which two
Chongqing rewards evenings. The cliff buildings are lit, the rivers reflect them, and the daytime version of the same view is a lot of concrete.
Day 1. Arrive, Liziba in the afternoon, Hongyadong from the Qiansimen bridge after dark rather than from inside, then hotpot.
Day 2. The Yangtze cableway across the river, Ciqikou old town in the morning before the coaches, and either Kuixinglou or the Great Hall of the People depending on your tolerance for crowds.
If you have a third day, the Dazu Rock Carvings are two hours out and are a UNESCO site of Song-dynasty cliff sculpture that almost no foreign itinerary includes.
Chongqing is on the 240-hour visa-free transit list, so an eligible passport can come without applying for anything provided the route continues to a third country — the transit rules cover what qualifies. By rail it is about 12 hours from Shanghai and four and a half from Chengdu; booking on 12306 with a passport is the cheap way in.
