Dujiangyan Irrigation System: what to actually see

Mount Qingcheng front mountain: cable car or hike?

Mount Qingcheng has two halves. The front mountain (Qianshan) is the famous Daoist temples, heavily trafficked, cable car access, can be done in 4-5 hours. The back mountain (Houshan) is a much quieter hike, no famous temples, requires 6-8 hours to appreciate, and is worth visiting only if you have a full day specifically for Qingcheng.

Option A: Take the cable car up, walk down (recommended for day trip). Cable car one way is ¥35, round trip is ¥60. You still pay the ¥5 electric boat across Yuecheng Lake to reach the cable car base. From the top station it is 20 minutes of flat walking to Shangqing Temple, which is the main sight. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is inside the Chengdu metropolitan area (not really a day trip in the traditional sense, more a half-day excursion) and pandas are most active in the morning. Go early. Here is what a Panda Base morning looks like.

Arrive at 7:30 AM (park opens at 7:30). Ticket is ¥55 in 2026. The pandas are fed at 8:30-9:30 AM and this is when they are outside and moving. By 11 AM most pandas have returned to their air-conditioned indoor dens and you will stare at a lump of fur sleeping.

Getting there from downtown: Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station, or Didi for ¥35-50 from People's Square. A shuttle from the metro station is ¥2. Total Panda Base cost including transport and entry is ¥70-100 per person.

You can do Panda Base in the morning and Dujiangyan in the afternoon technically, but the logistics are tight because Panda Base is northeast and Dujiangyan is northwest. I prefer either Panda Base alone as a half day (pair with Wuhou Temple or Jinli Street in the afternoon) or the Dujiangyan-Qingcheng combo alone as a full day.

Leshan Giant Buddha day trip: worth it but a full day

If you have already done the Chengdu Panda Base and want another panda experience, Bifengxia in Ya'an is the less crowded sister base. It has more pandas, bigger enclosures, and the pandas are outdoors longer because the climate is cooler. The trade-off is distance: Chengdu to Bifengxia is 2.5 hours each way by bus or a mix of HSR + taxi. This is a legitimate full-day trip.

Bifengxia day trip from Chengdu without a tour cost: about ¥280-340 per person including entry (¥110 in 2026). It is a long day but rewarding if you are a serious panda fan. The Ya'an area also has some decent mountain scenery.

Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are sold as "Chengdu day trips" by tour companies. Do not do this. It is 9 hours of driving for 3 hours at the actual site. Spend 2-3 days there or do not go.

What to do if the weather is bad

Chengdu gets fog, rain, and overcast weeks, especially in winter and early spring. Here are weather-adaptive day trip from Chengdu alternatives:

• Rainy day: skip mountain hikes. Do Sanxingdui Museum (indoor), Chengdu Museum (indoor), Kuanzhai Alley + Jinli Street (partially covered).
