Validity vs duration - the trap that catches people
Validity is your window to ENTER China; it starts the day the visa is issued, not the day you travel. Duration of stay is how long you can remain after each entry. Example: a 3-month single-entry visa issued January 1 means you must enter by March 31. Enter March 30 with a 60-day stay and you can legally remain until late May. Don't apply more than 3 months before your trip or you burn validity for nothing.

- Fill the COVA form online
Go to cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn. Allow 20-30 minutes: it asks for 5-year work history and education since high school. Use 'N/A' rather than leaving fields blank, and save your Application ID - you can't edit after submission.
- Print and gather documents
Print the completed COVA form, sign it, attach the 48x33mm photo, and assemble the documents from the checklist above.
- Submit at CVASC or consulate
Find your Chinese Visa Application Service Center at visaforchina.cn. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian applicants can walk in without an appointment; others should book online first.
- Pay the fee
US citizens: $140 flat (reduced from $185, valid through Dec 31, 2026). Other nationalities vary by country and entry type; CVASC centers add a service fee of roughly $35-40. Cards accepted at most centers.
- Wait ~4 business days
