Octopus for Tourists Card Not Showing in Apple Wallet After Payment: 2026 Fixes
It is almost always one of three causes: phone region is not set to Hong Kong, iOS is below 16, or the Octopus servers are still syncing. Open Settings, General, Language and Region, set Region to Hong Kong, then force-quit the Octopus for Tourists app and reopen it. The card usually shows up in Apple Wallet within 5 minutes after that. If it still does not appear after one hour, your payment may have failed silently. Open the Octopus for Tourists app, tap Card, and check if a card number is listed. If the screen says 'Add new Octopus card' but your foreign Visa or Mastercard was charged, the issuance failed and Octopus typically refunds within 7-14 working days to the original card. Email Octopus customer support (link in app Settings) with your transaction reference; phone support is hard to reach from overseas, so the in-app WhatsApp link on the Octopus support page is faster. For backup transit access while you wait, two options work today. Buy a physical Octopus On-Loan card at any MTR Customer Service Centre for HKD 150 (HKD 100 stored value plus HKD 50 deposit, refundable when you leave). Or use Alipay HK or WeChat Pay HK with the Transport QR code, which most MTR gates, buses, and ferries now accept and bills your foreign card directly. Tap the Octopus card on a 7-Eleven reader to confirm it works before you head to the MTR turnstile.
- Set iPhone Region to Hong Kong in Settings before opening Octopus for Tourists; this fixes most missing-card cases.
- If charged but no card appears, expect a 7-14 working day refund to the original Visa or Mastercard.
- Email Octopus customer support (link in app Settings) or the WhatsApp link on the Octopus support page with your transaction reference; the toll line is hard to reach internationally.
- Buy a physical On-Loan card at any MTR Customer Service Centre for HKD 150 as immediate backup.
- Alipay HK Transport QR works at most MTR gates and buses without an Octopus card and bills foreign Visa or Mastercard.
