Pick Kunming 昆明 for a slow spring trip. The city sits at 1,900 meters in Yunnan and holds 10-20 degrees Celsius in March and April, hence the Eternal Spring nickname. The pace is far slower than Beijing or Shanghai, locals dance and play instruments around Green Lake (Cuihu) every morning, and the air stays clean.
Timing matters. The black-headed seagulls migrate from Siberia to Cuihu from November through March; most have flown north by mid-April. If watching tens of thousands of gulls is the goal, fly in by mid-March and feed them before 10:00 AM, when the birds are still hungry. Green Lake itself is free to enter.
