Weather in China in April 2026: What to Expect & Pack

North (Beijing, Xi'an, Inner Mongolia): Dry, sunny, chilly at dawn, warm by mid-afternoon. Average highs hit 20-22°C (68-72°F), lows drop to 8-9°C (46-48°F). Sandstorms still possible in early April, usually gone by the 15th.

East (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing): Mild but wet. Shanghai averages 11 rainy days in April with 84 mm of rain. Temperatures sit at 12-21°C (54-70°F).

South (Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Guilin): Warm, humid, bring a raincoat. Guangzhou already feels like summer at 18-28°C (64-82°F) and 80%+ humidity. Hong Kong logs 153 mm of rain across 11 rainy days.

Southwest (Chengdu, Kunming, Guilin): Mild and comfortable. Kunming is hands-down the best April weather in China, 12-24°C (54-75°F), dry and sunny. Chengdu is gray and drizzly but pleasant at 14-23°C (57-73°F).

West (Lhasa, Urumqi): Still cold, especially at night. Lhasa drops to 3°C (38°F) after sunset. High altitude means brutal sun during the day.

Temperature in China in April: City-by-City Table

This is the table I send every client who emails me in March. Screenshot it. All numbers are monthly averages based on 30-year climate normals (sources: Hong Kong Observatory, China Meteorological Administration, Wikipedia climate tables).

A few things jump out. Kunming is the sweet spot: only 7 rainy days and bone-dry humidity. Chengdu and Guilin are gorgeous but you will get wet. What to Pack for China in April: Layers Beat Everything

Look, here's the thing nobody tells you about April weather in China: it's not about the right outfit, it's about the right layers. A client of mine, Marcus from LA, flew into Beijing April 3 last year packed like he was going to San Diego in July. Shorts, t-shirts, sandals. • 2-3 t-shirts + 2 long-sleeve shirts: mix and match as temperatures swing.

• Lightweight pants + one warmer pair: jeans work, but merino travel pants dry faster.

• Compact umbrella: one that fits in a day bag. Chengdu has rain 14 out of 30 days.

• Walking shoes you can get wet: running shoes over hiking boots unless you're doing Jiankou.

• SPF 30+ sunscreen and sunglasses: Lhasa and Xinjiang sun will burn you even at 17°C (62°F).

• N95 or KF94 masks: stash 3-5 for sandstorm days in Beijing.

• Portable charger (10,000 mAh): cold mornings drain phone batteries fast.

One more thing: don't bring a heavy winter coat thinking Beijing is cold. It's not. You'll be sweating at noon and stuffing it in your daypack by 11am. A mid-weight fleece plus a shell is enough for anywhere except Tibet or Xinjiang highlands.

Best Places to Visit in China in April

Here's where April actually shines. These are the trips where the weather makes the experience.

Wuhan (cherry blossoms, April 1-15). Wuhan University's campus has around 1,000 cherry trees dating back to the 1930s. Peak bloom is the first two weeks of April. My clients the Chens went last year, packed an umbrella, barely used it, temperature was a perfect 14-22°C (57-72°F). They told me, "Everyone said go to Japan for blossoms. Wrong. Wuhan was half the price and 20% of the crowds."

Yangtze River cruise (season opens April 1). Water levels rise, temperatures climb to 15-22°C (59-72°F) in the Three Gorges region, and cruise lines reopen. Expect ¥3,500-8,000 ($490-1,120) for a 3-4 day cruise from Chongqing to Yichang.

Kunming and Yunnan (best weather month). If you only pick one destination for April, pick Yunnan. Kunming's climate is genuinely perfect: 24°C / 12°C (75°F / 54°F), low humidity, barely any rain. Dali and Lijiang are equally lovely. Bonus: the Water Splashing Festival in Xishuangbanna runs April 13-15 and it is a legitimately wild cultural event.

Luoyang (peony festival). Luoyang's peony blooms peak April 10-25. The city throws the China National Peony Festival every year. Temperatures sit around 12-22°C (54-72°F), basically t-shirt weather during the day.

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain). Sea of clouds, flowering azaleas, 5-16°C (41-61°F) on the summit. Bring a warm layer. It's colder up there than the forecasts suggest.

Places to Skip (or Prep For) in April

Not everywhere is a win this month. Here's where to think twice.

Beijing in the first 10 days of April: sandstorms. The Gobi Desert dust season isn't quite done. On April 6, 2024, a client named Priya emailed me a photo from Tiananmen Square: the entire sky was orange. PM2.5 spiked above 500. She ducked into the National Museum for the afternoon, bought an N95 mask from a pharmacy for ¥15 ($2), and was fine. But her Great Wall hike got rescheduled. Plan a museum backup day if you land April 1-10, and check the China Meteorological Administration forecast before heading outdoors.

Shanghai if you hate rain. Eleven rainy days out of thirty is basically every other day. The Bund photos you see online? Mostly shot in October. April Shanghai is gray more often than blue. It's fine, just don't expect postcard skies.

Harbin and the far northeast. Still cold. Snow melting. Muddy. Wait until June.

Hainan (Sanya) for beach perfection. Already hitting 28-32°C (82-90°F) with humidity climbing. Swimmable, but not the crisp winter beach month some guides promise.

Tibet if you're worried about altitude. Lhasa is doable at 3-17°C (38-62°F) but April is pre-peak, meaning fewer flights and limited Everest Base Camp access. The road to EBC is sometimes still snow-blocked. May is easier.

April Festivals and Events Worth Knowing

Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day): April 4-6, 2026. This is a public holiday. Chinese families travel to clean ancestral graves and fly kites. Translation: trains sell out, airports get crowded, hotels near popular sites jump 20-40%. Book early or plan to sit still for those three days. Water Splashing Festival: April 13-15, 2026 in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. The Dai minority's new year celebration involves, you guessed it, everyone throwing water at everyone else. Pack a waterproof phone pouch. Temperatures down there are 20-32°C (68-90°F).

Cherry blossom peak (mid-to-late March through April 10 in most cities). Wuhan University, Beijing's Yuyuantan Park, Qingdao Zhongshan Park, and Nanjing's Jiming Temple all put on a show.
