UK Citizens: Visa-Free Transit Through Beijing and Shanghai with a Vietnam Stop (2026)
No visa needed. From 17 February 2026 to 31 December 2026, UK ordinary passport holders enter mainland China visa-free for stays up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, and transit. Multiple entries are allowed, with each entry counted separately and capped at 30 days. The London-Beijing-Vietnam-Shanghai-London route works under this policy: each China entry resets the 30-day clock, and Vietnam acts as the third country between the two China legs. The older 240-hour transit policy still exists as a backup, but the 30-day rule is simpler and covers more ground. Carry your full itinerary and the return ticket to London at check-in, since some airline staff still default to the old visa-required script. Hotels handle police registration automatically; if you stay at a private flat, register at the local police station within 24 hours. Beijing and Shanghai are both eligible entry ports. Note: extensions are not permitted, so book your departure within the 30-day window. Cross-province travel is allowed under both policies, but the 30-day rule covers more provinces than transit-only rules. Confirm the policy is still active before flying, since it expires on 31 December 2026.
