VPN & Internet
Internet access in China requires planning. The Great Firewall blocks Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and most Western news. VPNs need to be installed and tested before arrival because VPN websites are also blocked. eSIMs from Airalo or Holafly preserve your home apps without VPN, and roaming on US/EU carriers often bypasses the firewall entirely. Hotel WiFi, Chinese SIM cards, and which VPN protocols still work in 2025.

For a short China trip, should I rely on eSIM, roaming, or VPN if I need stable access to Google, Zoom, Slack, or Office365?
Do not depend on a single VPN; layer an eSIM, your work VPN, and a backup VPN.

Should I install a China eSIM before arriving, and do I still need a VPN?
Install the eSIM before you fly so it is active on landing, not waiting on blocked app stores.
