Hainan Is the Part of China Americans Can Visit Without a Visa
Americans cannot enter mainland China visa-free for a holiday. They can fly to Hainan and stay thirty days.
Hainan runs its own entry policy, separate from the national one, covering 59 nationalities — and unlike the mainland's 30-day scheme, that list includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Russia. It is the one part of China a US passport reaches with nothing but a passport.
What the Hainan policy actually allows
An ordinary passport from one of the 59 countries, up to 30 days.
Purposes: tourism, business, visits, family, medical treatment, exhibitions and sport. Work and study are excluded.
Your permitted area is Hainan Province. This is not a back door to the mainland — leaving the island for Guangzhou or Shanghai is a separate entry needing its own visa or scheme.
Entry through any open port in the province: Haikou Meilan and Sanya Phoenix airports are the usual ones, and cruise arrivals qualify.
No advance declaration is required. This is the part older guides get wrong — the policy used to need a travel agency to file for you in advance, and it no longer does. You land, you present the passport, border control admits you.
For comparison: the national visa-free list covers 50 countries for 30 days on the mainland and does not include the US. What Americans can do without a visa covers the 240-hour transit alternative, which requires an onward ticket to a third country and is the other way in. Hainan requires no onward third-country ticket at all, which makes it the simpler option for a straightforward holiday.
If you want the mainland as well, a 10-year multiple-entry visa is $140 flat and removes the question entirely.
The duty-free allowance is the other reason people come
Hainan's offshore duty-free scheme gives each qualifying traveller ¥100,000 of duty-free purchasing a year. There is no cap on the number of transactions inside that, it resets on 1 January, and unused allowance does not carry over.
Foreign visitors leaving the island qualify: purchases count against the same ¥100,000 annual allowance, with no limit on how many times you use it. The product range was widened from 45 categories to 47 over the 2025–26 winter.
Collection works two ways, and neither is at the till. Either you pick the goods up at a departure collection point — airport, station or port — showing ID and your departure itinerary, and carry them out in one go; or you have them posted to an address outside Hainan. Plan the pickup into your departure time, because it is a separate counter and a separate queue.
Sanya versus Haikou
They are 300 km apart at opposite ends of the island and they are not interchangeable.

A high-speed rail loop runs around the island, so moving between them is about ninety minutes on the east line. Fly into Haikou and out of Sanya, or the reverse, rather than backtracking.
On timing: Hainan is tropical, and the season that matters is the typhoon season from roughly July to September. The dry, reliable window is November to April, which is also when Chinese domestic tourism arrives in force and prices roughly double. May to June is the compromise.
Practical notes
It is China, so the payment and connectivity problems are the same as anywhere else — set up WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly, and sort out data the same way.
Hotel prices in Sanya swing more than anywhere else in China between the winter peak and the summer typhoon season. The same room can be three times the price in February that it is in August.
The 30-day clock starts at entry, not at check-in, and overstaying carries the usual ¥500 a day up to ¥10,000.
