Connecting Through Chengdu to Changsha: Two Questions That Decide Everything
Two questions decide everything about this connection, and you can answer both before you leave home.
Which Chengdu airport is on your ticket — CTU or TFU? They are 80 km apart and switching between them costs 60 to 90 minutes. And did you buy one ticket or two? That determines whether you re-check your bag or just walk it through.
Everything else follows from those two answers.
Question one: CTU or TFU
Chengdu has two international airports with separate codes, and airlines are not always clear about it in the confirmation email. Look for the three-letter code on the e-ticket itself.

If your international arrival and your Changsha departure are at different airports, stop reading the rest of this as a normal connection. Go to the airport-switch section below and budget accordingly.
Question two: one ticket or two
This is the only thing that determines what happens to your suitcase.
One booking reference, airlines with an interline agreement: the bag is tagged through to Changsha. You still collect it off the belt in Chengdu and walk it through customs, because customs happens at your first point of entry. Then you hand it back at the transfer counter.
Two separate reservations — common with award tickets or budget domestic carriers: you collect the bag and check it in again from scratch at the domestic departures counter. Allow an extra hour.
Transfer counters at both airports sit just past the customs exit, signed International-to-Domestic Transfer. If a bag does not appear, file the report at the baggage desk in the Chengdu international arrivals hall, not later in Changsha.
Immigration happens in Chengdu, not Changsha
This is the part that catches people. Chengdu is your first point of entry into mainland China, so passport control and customs happen there even though your destination is Changsha. The Chengdu to Changsha leg is a domestic flight; there is no second immigration check at the other end.
The flow: off the plane, into the international arrivals hall, customs and health declaration on the China Customs app before you reach the counter, then immigration — passport, visa or visa-free proof, and fingerprints. First visit means full enrolment; e-channels only open to people who completed a full entry within the past year.

Weekend, storm season or a public holiday: take the comfortable column and add an hour.
If you have to switch airports
Eighty kilometres between them, and the connection logic is much stricter than a same-airport transfer. Chengdu does run an official two-airport interchange service for passengers connecting between CTU and TFU, which is worth asking about at the transfer desk.

The metro is the most predictable of the three, which on a connection matters more than being fastest.
The Changsha leg
Once you are landside on the domestic side, this is one of the easier hops in China: 1h45 to 2h in the air, 15 to 25 flights a day across both Chengdu airports, on Sichuan Airlines, Air China, China Southern, Hainan and budget carriers. Fares run ¥400 to ¥900, typically ¥500 to ¥700.
At Changsha Huanghua (CSX) domestic arrivals put you straight out landside. Into the city: Metro Line 6 is ¥3–7 and 40 to 50 minutes; a taxi is ¥90–130 in 30 to 45; Didi runs ¥70–110.
If the flight cancels, high-speed rail is the fallback — Chengdu East to Changsha South in about six to seven hours. Keep 12306 set up with your passport before you travel, because registering it on the day is not a fast process.
If you are doing this visa-free
Two policies apply, and they answer different questions.
Twenty-four-hour direct transit lets you stay airside with no visa if you are connecting between two international flights. It does not let you out of the terminal, so it does not apply to a domestic Chengdu to Changsha leg.
The 240-hour visa-free transit does. Sichuan and Hunan are both on the approved list, and the policy allows domestic movement inside approved regions — so Chengdu in, Changsha visit, then out to a third country works. What it will not accept is a round trip back to where you started (the full 240-hour rules).
Not eligible, or staying longer? An L tourist visa runs about four working days through the visa centres in 2026.
Set up before you land
Chengdu runs on QR payment. Have Alipay or WeChat Pay working with a foreign card before you arrive — the metro gates, the taxi and the airport food court all expect it. Didi has a full English interface and takes international cards. Amap, not Google Maps, for terminal layouts and transit.
