Best-Preserved Old Lane Houses in Shanghai: Wukang Road and the French Concession (2026)

Walk Wukang Road 武康路 and Fuxing Middle Road 复兴中路 in the Former French Concession for the best-preserved Shanghai lane houses (longtang 弄堂, also called shikumen 石库门). Wukang Road is 1.17 km long with 37 officially protected historic buildings — the highest density of protected residential architecture in the city. Wukang Mansion 武康大楼 at the road's western end is the iconic photo spot, a 1924 Hudec-designed wedge of red brick. Skip Tianzifang 田子坊 — once a real lane neighborhood, now a concentrated tourist alley with souvenir shops and noticeably worse architecture. For a renovated, partly commercial experience, visit Zhang Yuan 张园 in Jing'an, reopened in 2022 with luxury retail inside restored shikumen courtyards. The non-commercial lanes still have residents — laundry on poles, kids on bikes, old men playing xiangqi. Walk through quietly. Do not enter private courtyards, and do not photograph people without asking. Visit between 7–9 AM for soft light, low crowds, and open neighborhood breakfast stalls (jianbing ¥8, you tiao ¥3). Take Metro Line 10 or 11 to Shanghai Library 上海图书馆 station, exit 1, then walk south on Wukang Road. A flat coffee at one of the dozen cafes lining the route runs ¥35–50 in 2026. Bring comfortable shoes — the area is best on foot, and old lane drainage floods quickly in heavy rain, so check the forecast.
