Guizhou's small towns are reachable by high-speed rail since 2022. From Guiyang you reach Kaili South in 1 hour and transfer 40 minutes by car to Xijiang Miao Village 西江千户苗寨; from Guangzhou the bullet to Congjiang takes 4 hours, and Zhaoxing Dong Village 肇兴侗寨 sits 7 km from the station. Pick April–May for the flooded terraced fields or September–October for the harvest. Avoid December–February: damp 5°C cold, low cloud, and patchy heating in older guesthouses. Summer (June–August) is green but rains 60% of days.
Cash is rarely accepted. Link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay TourCard or WeChat Pay International before flying; both work at village restaurants, homestays, and the Xijiang ticket gate. Google Maps mislabels rural roads — switch to Apple Maps (works in China) or Gaode 高德地图 (Chinese-only interface; share addresses with locals via the screenshot button).
