Photographing the Hong Kong Tram on Chun Yeung Street: Schedule, Lens, and Timing (2026)

Wait for an eastbound tram with the destination sign reading North Point 北角 — only those trams cut through the wet market on Chun Yeung Street 春秧街. Most eastbound trams skip the loop and run straight to Shau Kei Wan or Sai Wan Ho, so a tram appearing 30 seconds after the last one is no guarantee. Frequency on the network is 2-4 minutes during the day, but the North Point loop runs less often, and the last tram of the day enters Chun Yeung Street around 19:00 to 19:30. Plan the shoot before sunset if you want both the tram and the market stalls in the same frame. Stand at the eastern end of the street near the Marble Road junction; the tram passes within a meter of the fruit stalls there, which gives the famous compressed perspective. A 35mm to 85mm lens works well — wider than that and the stalls dominate. Golden hour lighting from late afternoon gives the warmest result; midday sun is harsh and crowds are thicker. The tram fare itself is HK$3 for adults, paid with Octopus or exact cash dropped into the box at the front when boarding (you board at the rear). Riding through once before shooting helps you time the next pass.
