As of early 2026, China runs 50,000+ km of dedicated high-speed rail, carries 4.31 billion passengers per year, and operates 1,580+ high-speed trainsets at top speeds of 350 km/h (217 mph). That's bigger than the HSR networks of Japan, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and South Korea, combined. It started in 2008 with one short line (Beijing–Tianjin). Eighteen years later, it covers 94% of Chinese cities over 1 million people and connects 33 of 34 provincial-level regions. Only Tibet is still conventional-rail-only, and even that changes in 2026 when the Sichuan-Tibet line opens its first HSR segment.
The 8+8 Grid: How to Read the China Bullet Train Map
Here's the framework. In 2016, China's National Development and Reform Commission published the revised Mid-to-Long Term Railway Network Plan, laying out eight vertical (north-south) corridors and eight horizontal (east-west) corridors. Sixteen lines total. Target completion around 2030. Current progress: about 80% built, on schedule.

V1, the Coastal HSR, is the longest passenger rail corridor in the world: over 5,000 km from Dalian to the Vietnamese border. Nobody rides the whole thing in one go (it'd take 20+ hours), but the segments are the most-booked HSR routes in China. V2, Beijing-Shanghai (京沪高铁), is the one you've probably heard of. 1,318 km in 4 hours 18 minutes on the G7. The 8 Horizontal Corridors (East-West)
These run east to west. They're generally longer because China is wider than it is tall (about 5,200 km east-west versus 5,500 km north-south, but the usable populated strip runs east-west), and they're how you get from the coastal megacities into the interior and the historical heartland.

The scenic winner is H6, the Shanghai-Kunming HSR (沪昆高铁): 2,066 km through Hangzhou, Nanchang, Changsha, and Guiyang. The Guizhou section climbs through karst mountains and crosses what feels like a bridge every 30 seconds. I did Changsha to Guiyang last spring and half the passengers had phones pressed to the windows the whole way. ¥465 ($65) in second class.
H4, the Land Bridge corridor, is the longest east-west shot: 3,422 km from the Pacific at Lianyungang to Ürümqi in the far western desert. The modern Silk Road. Parts aren't fully high-speed yet (the Lanzhou-Ürümqi section runs at 250 km/h), but the whole route books end to end.
The Best Free Interactive China HSR Maps

2. TravelChinaGuide Railway Map is static but clean. A tourist-friendly PNG map showing major HSR corridors with the big cities labeled in English. 3. Wikipedia's HSR diagrams. The System Diagram SVG on the High-speed rail in China Wikipedia page is one of the clearest schematic views of the 8+8 grid anywhere. It abstracts the corridors into clean straight lines, the way the Tube map abstracts London. Good for teaching yourself the framework.
Ones I'd skip: 12306.cn's own map (only in Chinese, painful UX). Google Maps (works inside China but the railway layer is spotty). Paper maps sold at station kiosks, outdated the moment they print.
Regional Submaps: The 5 Zones That Actually Matter
Sixteen corridors is still a lot. So here's how I mentally chunk the china high speed map into five regions. Pick the region your trip covers and ignore the rest.
North China (Beijing hub). Every northern corridor passes through Beijing. From here you hit Tianjin in 30 minutes, Shanghai in 4.5 hours, Xi'an in 4.5 hours, Harbin in 4.5 hours, Hong Kong in 9 hours. Key stations: Beijing South for Jinghu, Beijing West for Beijing-Hong Kong, Beijing Chaoyang for the new lines.
East China (Shanghai/Hangzhou hub). The densest HSR region on the planet. Shanghai Hongqiao alone handles 300+ HSR departures per day. Shanghai → Suzhou in 25 min, Shanghai → Hangzhou in 50 min, Shanghai → Nanjing in 70 min. Day-trip distances. This is where China's HSR feels most like a metro.
South China (Guangzhou/Shenzhen/Hong Kong hub). The Pearl River Delta is hammered with HSR. Guangzhou South → Shenzhen North in 30 min, Guangzhou → Hong Kong West Kowloon in 48 min (border control happens inside the station, which is the real magic trick). From Guangzhou you branch west to Kunming (H8) or north to Wuhan and Beijing (V3/V4).
Central China (Wuhan/Zhengzhou hub). The one tourists overlook. Zhengzhou East alone sits on four of the 16 corridors, and Wuhan is the other megajunction. If you're doing a cross-country trip, you'll probably change here whether you want to or not. First time I connected at Zhengzhou East, I walked 1.2 km between platforms and thought I was in an airport terminal.
West China (Chengdu/Xi'an hub). Xi'an sits on both V6 and H4, connecting to Beijing, Chengdu, Lanzhou, and Zhengzhou. Chengdu reaches Chongqing in 1 hour, Guiyang in 3 hours, and soon Lhasa via the new Sichuan-Tibet line opening in stages 2027-2030.
How to Use the Map to Plan a Multi-City Trip

Is there an official China HSR map in English?
Not really. China Railway's 12306.cn map is Chinese-only and clunky. The closest English alternative is cnrail.geogv.org — open-source, community-built, but it uses official China Railway data. For static printed-style maps, TravelChinaGuide and ChinaHighlights are the most commonly cited.
How long is the China HSR network now?
