Xiamen to Zhangzhou Bus: No Tour Group, No Mandarin Needed

Getting from Xiamen to Zhangzhou on your own is genuinely easy — the two cities are only about 26km apart and connected by trains running almost every few minutes. The catch is the misinformation: guides mix up Xiamen's bus stations with its high-speed rail stations, invent train numbers, and tell you the Xiamen BRT goes to Zhangzhou (it doesn't). Here's how it actually works in 2026.

The fast way: high-speed rail

Frequent EMU trains — C, D and G services — run from Xiamen to Zhangzhou Station all day. Both Xiamen Station (厦门站) and Xiamen North (厦门北站) serve the route, so use whichever is closer to you. The ride is short, between about 16 and 35 minutes depending on the service, with well over a hundred departures a day and second-class fares in the rough range of ¥13 to ¥20. First train around 6:30am, last around 11:30pm.

Don't bother hunting for a specific train number — they change daily and there are dozens. Just book on 12306 with your passport for your travel date and pick whatever leaves soonest.

One thing the old guides skip: Zhangzhou Station sits about 10km south of the city centre, out in Longhai, not downtown. Factor in a short onward hop once you arrive (see below).

About that "BRT to Zhangzhou"

This trips a lot of people up, so be clear: Xiamen's BRT is a city-only system — it runs within Xiamen (it was China's first elevated BRT, linking the port area to the train station, universities and the airport) and does not cross into Zhangzhou. What does link the two cities by road is a cross-regional rapid bus, the K3 line, which started in early 2025. Details on its fare and frequency aren't well documented, so if you want the road option, the simpler bet is a regular intercity coach.

The bus option

Plenty of intercity coaches run Xiamen to Zhangzhou from several long-distance stations — Hubin (湖滨), Fanghu (枋湖), Wucun (梧村) and Jimei (集美) among them — roughly every 20 minutes from about 6:30am to 9pm, taking around 30 minutes between the cities. Buy at the ticket window. The bus tends to drop you closer to central Zhangzhou than the high-speed station does, which is its one real advantage; otherwise the train wins on speed and frequency.

Getting from Zhangzhou Station into town

Since the high-speed station is about 10km south of the centre, plan a short transfer when you arrive: a taxi or Didi takes 15 to 20 minutes, or you can catch a city bus from the station square toward downtown. It's a quick, cheap hop — just don't expect to step off the train into the old town.

What's worth seeing

In the city itself, head for Zhangzhou Old Town (漳州古城), a walkable historic quarter over a thousand years old at the heart of Hokkien (Minnan) culture — it won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage conservation award in 2004. You'll find a Confucian temple, stone memorial arches, tiny old shrines, and a lot of street food, all on foot.

A common mix-up worth heading off: the famous Fujian tulou — the great circular Hakka earthen houses — are in the wider Zhangzhou prefecture, not in Zhangzhou city. The best-known cluster is in Nanjing County (南靖), about 160km from Xiamen, with another group in Hua'an (about 110km). Reaching them is a separate full-day trip — typically the high-speed train to Zhangzhou plus a roughly two-hour bus to Shuyang, or a direct long-distance bus from Xiamen. Plan the tulou as their own day, not as a side stop "in Zhangzhou."
